Abby Oakland
Assistant Coach

Abby Oakland is in her first season as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Central, working with the varsity and also serving as head junior varsity coach.

A Fulda, Minn. native, Oakland received her master’s degree at Northern State Univ. (S.D.) in 2009 and served the Wolves as a women’s basketball graduate assistant and wellness lab instructor. She also gained experience serving as an SMSU basketball camp intern and counselor.

“We’re excited to have Abby on staff,” coach Mike Jacobsma said. “She comes from a winning program with a lot of tradition and she is a person of high character and moral values. Abby fits Central’s mission of developing student-athletes into well-rounded people.”

At Division II SMSU, Oakland was a four-year letterwinner in both basketball and golf. She served on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee four years and was named the SMSU Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award winner in 2007-08. She received academic all-Northern Sun Conference recognition six times. Oakland was also named to the ESPN The Magazine All-District V women’s basketball academic squad in 2009, earning third-team recognition, and is a two-time National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team honoree. She holds the career free-throw percentage record (85.6) and is a three-time all-league pick on the golf course.

Gary Boeyink
Assistant Coach

Gary Boeyink, who launched the Central College women’s basketball program in 1973 and was among the sport’s collegiate pioneers, is entering his 33rd season on staff. He was the team’s first and only head coach for 28 years, retiring in 2001. He posted a 399-287 career mark and guided Central to the 1993 NCAA Division III championship. Boeyink was the regional coach of the year in 1985 and was tabbed Division III coach of the year by Basketball Gazette. He was inducted into the Central College Athletics Hall of Honor in 2010.

Under Boeyink, Central won a share of Iowa Conference titles in 1983, 1985, 1995 and 1998 while taking outright championships in 1993 and 1994. The Dutch reached the NCAA Division III tournament five times (1983, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1998).

Following his retirement, Boeyink coached a girls’ AAU squad, then rejoined the Dutch staff as an assistant and as junior varsity coach during the 2007-08 campaign.

A 1959 Central graduate, Boeyink received a master’s degree from Colorado State University. He returned to campus in 1967 following a successful Iowa high school coaching career. He guided CAL of Latimer to a 24-2 mark before moving to Clear Lake, where his four-year mark was 47-34. At Central Boeyink served as head baseball coach and assistant men’s basketball coach prior to taking a leave for postgraduate study at the University of Iowa. He was an exercise science faculty member at Central.
